Welcome to Marit Parker – our new Assistant Head Grower who started this week. With a background in community growing we’re hoping she’ll help us improve our community engagement. Meanwhile there are lots of tomatoes to get planted!

Veg box contents – May. Feeling The Hungry Gap

We’re well into the challenges of the hungry gap   – winter crops all finished, summers’ yet to come. We have to look further afield to source veg for the boxes – and things will be a little basic  for a while. We’ve got salad onions, kale, leeks, chard and mixed herbs of our own for the boxes. Potatoes, onions and carrot and a few roots will be coming in  – beetroot (apologies if they have been a little soft – getting to the end of their stored life ) and swede. Tomatoes in boxes next week – from the Isle of Wight. Very little organic Welsh/UK veg around but we source from as near as possible.

Its is good time to be in a network of small local growers so we can help each other with supply – indeed my missive this week from our near namesake Riverford (I get a fruit box from them!) was relating their learning that it is impossible to grow a wide enough range of veg on one site to support a box scheme. But it’s not our intention to extend to France and Spain as they have done – we’re staying more local and looking to work more closely with enterprises like Field Days Organicin the Vale of Glamorgan who supplemented the lovely Cavolo Nero, Kale  and Chard for recent boxes.

Lots of fresh variety back in the boxes from us come June/July.

Don’t forget to revisit your account to update substitutions and exclusions. Changes to your order – pausing, substitutions, extras can  be made through our ordering system  Bucky Box –  by the Friday before your box is due.   Log into your Bucky Box account and take a look.

What’s Going on at the Field this week.

Its all about planting!! We’ve had first delivery of baby plants and have hundreds to get out into the field and polytunnels.

We have a volunteer day every Friday so if you”d like to have a closer relationship  with your veg box, or have a break from the day to day come and join us! (email first so we know to expect you).

Summer promise! Out with the old – in with the new. We’re head down in planting for the next few weeks.

Diversification Project

As our diversification project draws to a close we’re seeing some interesting outcomes, with lots of potential. We had herbal teas from the permaculture garden to try at the Cowbridge Mayfair, and Poppy was busy selling edible and medicinal plants at Made in Roath last weekend.

Nettle, Three Mint and Meadowsweet Tea, dehydrated raw veg crackers from the Diversification Project being trialled at the weekend. Three Mint and Beetroot Crackers polled the best!
