Veg box contents – April. The Hungry Gap

Veg growers come  into lean times now as winter crops in storage are finished, crops in the field are ploughed in to prepare for summer crops, and polytunnels cleared to make way for summer salads, tomatoes, peas etc. If you look for the country of origin on most veg currently at the supermarkets you’ll find its imported from overseas. We always debate whether we should stop our boxes at this time, as many other small box schemes do, or  turn to bought in produce. We choose the latter  – finding that most customers understand the situation and prefer a continuity of supply. In fact a co-operative model of having a group of organic growers, producing what grows best on their own land whom are collectively bought from makes a lot of sustainable and practical sense. We buy in from an organic wholesaler based in Lampeter, and take Welsh produce where its available, then UK. We don’t buy in from abroad – though you might get some early Isle of Wight tomatoes! This does mean we’ll have limited variety for a couple of months. Staple carrots, potatoes and onions will remain – though the carrots supplied are getting to the end of their strorage life and not in best condition. We’ll have our own leeks, salad onions, chard and russian and green kale. Winter salad and stir fry are sadly in their last week. It’ll be mainly roots for a while – swede, beetroot, celeriac, but we’ve rung the changes this week with some bought in mushrooms. Hope you enjoyed!

Lots of fresh variety back in the boxes come June/July.
